BOPP Tape Technical Guide: Principle, Specifications & Performance Indicators
BOPP packing tape is one of the most widely used packaging consumables for carton sealing, logistics consolidation, export shipments and general bundling. However, many buyers and packaging engineers run into the same problem: two rolls both labeled “BOPP tape” can behave very differently under real working conditions. Some break easily when pulled, some peel off after a few days in storage, and many products only look thick on paper due to irregular filling formulas.
This guide breaks down BOPP adhesive tape from the ground up. We will cover its working principle, standard specifications, core performance metrics, testing methods, grade classification and common selection pitfalls. After reading, you will be able to evaluate tape quality based on technical data instead of superficial descriptions.
BOPP stands for Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene. During the manufacturing process, polypropylene pellets are melted and extruded into a sheet, then stretched simultaneously along the machine direction (MD) and transverse direction (TD).
This biaxial stretching rearranges polypropylene molecules into an oriented structure. The oriented molecular chain gives the film high tensile strength, good stiffness and stable dimensional performance.
Most standard BOPP sealing tapes adopt water-based acrylic PSA. Pressure-sensitive adhesive features a key property: permanent tackiness at room temperature. It forms adhesion under light pressure without heat curing or solvent activation.
The adhesive system consists mainly of acrylic emulsion, functional additives and fillers. Its formula directly determines initial tack, peel strength and holding power.
The coating process uses an anilox roller to transfer adhesive onto the corona-treated BOPP surface. Uniform coating control is critical; uneven glue distribution leads to inconsistent stickiness across the same roll.
All parameters below are industry common standards for reference. Custom dimensions are available upon request.
| Item | Common Options | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 40μm, 45μm, 50μm, 52μm, 60μm | Thicker film brings higher tensile resistance |
| Width | 48mm, 50mm, 55mm, 60mm | Custom widths for automatic sealing lines |
| Length | 50m, 100m, 150m, 200m | Customizable length |
| Paper core | 76mm (3 inch) | Dense, rigid paper tube avoids collapsing |
| Appearance | Clear, tan, solid color, printed logo | Printable version for brand & anti-counterfeit |
These test items are the core basis for quality comparison.
- Tensile strength & elongation at break (MD) Shows how much pulling force the tape can withstand and whether it stretches before breaking. Critical for heavy cartons and automated sealing machines.
- 180° Peel Strength (Unit: N/25mm) Measures bonding force between tape and cardboard. It reflects how strongly the tape sticks once applied.
- Holding Power Also called shear resistance. It tests whether the tape slides or falls under sustained load. Holding power is far more important than initial tack for long-term storage and sea freight.
- Initial Tack (Ball Tack Test) Describes instant sticking ability when the tape first touches the surface. High initial tack feels sticky immediately, but it cannot represent long-term retention.
- Operating temperature range: Standard grade, low-temperature resistant grade for cold warehouse or winter outdoor use.
- Anti-aging & UV resistance: Performance retention after long storage or sunlight exposure. Poor-quality tape loses tack rapidly after aging.
- Humidity resistance: Anti-debonding performance under high humidity, common challenge for coastal warehouses and container shipping.
- Storage environment: Store in cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Recommended storage temperature: 15–25℃.
- Stacking: Do not stack heavy goods on top of tape rolls to avoid deformation.
- Shelf life: PSA performance will gradually decline after expiration. Use within manufacturer’s suggested shelf life.
- Application surface: Remove dust and grease on corrugated board before applying tape.
- Cutting: Use matched dispenser or sharp cutter to get clean edges.
The overall performance of BOPP packing tape is determined by three core factors: BOPP film quality, acrylic adhesive formula and coating process. When sourcing, prioritize matching performance indicators to your application scenario, then confirm specifications and run sample validation before bulk purchase. Q1: What is the difference between BOPP tape and PVC tape? A: BOPP tape is lighter, high tensile, low cost for carton sealing. PVC tape is softer, better conformability, often used for wire wrapping and insulation instead of heavy sealing.
Q2: Is water-based acrylic BOPP tape environmentally friendly? A: Water-based PSA uses water as solvent instead of toxic organic solvent. It meets most general packaging environmental requirements.
Q3: Can I print my logo on BOPP tape?
A: Yes. Custom printed BOPP tape supports brand logos, warning marks and company information.
